low moral standards, infinite creativity for CASSIOPEIA MACDONALD
Sweat pouring down her face, Rebecca Clutch crossed the quidditch pitch at a jog for the seventh time that afternoon. It was a pleasant enough day for it , warm sun beating at her back as stains formed at the collar of her undershirt, cooled by the slight breeze that followed her across the field. Becca savored this time -- before practice had quite started up among the teams and the pitch sat quiet and lonely on the grounds, awaiting the coming of its shining moments. Most days she would make her way there to practice on her own, a Cleansweep Five wrapped tenderly in cloth and strapped to a bag with her gear, tucked safely away off the field. Laps came first, at least ten crossings from end to end, and if she wasn't too tired after, a few aerial acrobatics to catch up from what she considered a lazy summer. Aside from her month-long quidditch retreat in Barcelona, Becca had spent a large chunk of the break exiled with her brother to their grandparents' home in Edinburgh, away from her makeshift gym and dragged frequently to gossip-laden garden parties.

Glad as she was to be away from cities and upper middle-class nonsense, however, the first week back at Hogwarts had not gone as smoothly as Becca might have hoped. Despite the irritation of being henpecked by her grandmother, at least garden parties, for the most part, took place outside instead of squashed within the confines of a castle. Like the years before, Becca needed the time and the fresh air of a daily workout to cope with the stress of being stuck in classrooms all day, at least until she felt acclimated once again to the environment. Little things helped, of course, like the paths she took to class that had her stepping through the courtyard at least twice during the day, and classes like Advanced Herbology that let her spend a fair amount of time in the greenhouses during the week.

Dirt was still packed deeply under Becca's nails as she pulled the old sweatshirt around her waist tighter to keep from slipping, panting to the pace of her feet crossing the halfway mark. None of it mattered much, now, beyond the feel of her long hair as it swayed against her back, pulled tight into a long plait that had begun to fray around her face, strands of brown hair clinging to sweat as it beaded on her face. Her cheeks and shoulders flushed from the heat, chest burning for breath, legs aching from the strain of a week's catch-up, but her eyes had fixed on the center hoop, getting closer.

Fifteen minutes later, she felt like diving head first into the lake.

The next best thing (and closer in proximity) was to sprawl in the cool grass with her lucky canteen as her legs throbbed in time with the slowing thrum of her heart. Becca closed her eyes and poured cold water over her head, breath puffing out heavily with a spray of droplets as she sighed in relief and kicked off her sweats and trainers, the shorts underneath allowing for better ventilation.

Thankfully no one else would likely be wandering around the pitch this early in the year.

Notes: Freaking cuties being all cute n' stuff.
I'D NEVER SAY A WORD.
If anyone had asked her, Cassie would’ve said that she adored being there. On the Quidditch Pitch was where her confidence soared from its usually lacking height, and the girl finally embraced some part of her that could be proud of her outputs. It was a rarity, and not even that great in size in comparison to others- But to her, success was an staircase going upward, and she had to climb them one step at a time. It terrified her to be in the spotlight. Why on earth she had gone out for the team, she wouldn’t ever know. It was stressful, and exhausting- More so than usual socializing. Game day was spent with a few hours playing, and the rest dedicated to sleeping so that she would be recharged. It drained her more than it did to talk to people, and that meant something.

She hadn’t been able to make it to the latest practice as she had had quite the stomach bug due to some chocolates found at the bottom of her trunk. Never would she admit to that, but nevertheless that was why she had been out. It had had its way with her system, but now that she had returned to health, she decided that the best thing to do was to get back into her routine with a make-up workout session.

Waking up so early had proven too difficult. While she wasn’t a night owl, she most certainly was not a morning person. Cassiopeia loved her sleep, and whenever an opportunity arose, she would take it ecstatically. Being the perfectionist she was when it came to school work, she was often up late into the night writing her essays or completing classwork that hadn’t been completed due to daydreams and open-eyed naps. She was dedicated to everything she did and put her best self forward with only self-consciousness holding her back slightly, but there were times she got a little loosey-goosey.

Quidditch was one of those things. The exercise she got allowed her to feel less stressed once she returned to her dorm, but while it was occurring, she was entirely too worried about how she looked. She knew she wasn’t the skinniest by any means, or even the most toned, but she also knew that she was extremely clumsy and a little too awkward when it came to some of the drills they ran. It was why she had planned on coming out here so early in the morning, even if it meant waking up early: Nobody would be there. She wouldn’t have to stress with how she looked or concern herself with being deemed by other teammates as less than adequate; she’d get to feel free in being by herself and get the work in that she needed to.

Only she hadn't made it out there in time. The night had been a rather sleepless one until a few hours before dawn, and so she had allowed herself to snooze and snooze until it soon became afternoon. She did make it out there, however. The bag was heavy with all of the equipment she lugged down to the grassy field, causing her posture to be even poorer than usual. Sleep still had its way with her body, her eyes only half open- But more so half closed- and her face lacked a goodnight’s sleep glow. Her hair had been halfheartedly tied away in a sort of combination between a ponytail and a bun, only confident enough to portray the messy look because she assumed no one else would be there.

Oh how she had been.

If she had been requested to retell the tale, she would’ve said she presumed the girl injured at first. Who else would wish to come in the afternoon to undergo the horrible still-summer heat and expose sensitive skin to the harsh rays of the sun at the hottest point in the day? Apparently, Rebecca Clutch did. The said female laid in the grass, her chest rising and falling, indicating that she too had come to work out- And seemed to have already at it for sometime.

Instantly Cassiopeia grew sheepish. The two didn’t have any other contact than practices and the fact that her brother was the boy she was currently dating- If one could even consider it to be dating. Kit and her hardly were the average couple, but in terms of the stereotypical awkward relationships with the siblings of the person being courted, she was right on par. Then again, Cassie was awkward with everyone, but the fact she was her boyfriend’s sister simply added to the mix.

“H-Hey Becca,” she stuttered, internally developing the wish to run back inside and avoid the encounter. Her intent wasn’t to scare the older girl, for surely she wasn’t expecting anyone else to be down here (Cassie certainly hadn’t). Fumbling with the material of her thin, purple shirt, she cautiously shuffled forward. She took the moments in between to think about what she was going to say, perfecting the single phrase of greeting over and over again in her head so that she wouldn’t mess it up.

“Sure is hot, huh?”

Why? Why did that have to be what she said? Of course it was hot. The poor girl lying in the grass with sweat pooling at her brow and temple could obviously attest to the fact. No one liked a Captain Obvious, and awkwardly she cleared her throat. Her eyes evaded her entirely, but not before she caught the shortness of the workout shorts the girl wore. Her heart leapt into throat, her eyes frantically taking toward anything other than the girl as slight adrenaline kicked in.

What had that been?

Well, so much for solitude.

Only Becca's head arose from the grass, as if flipped on a hinge like the Gryffindor house ghost, flyaways springing free from her plait in nearly every direction. It was just Cassie, Kit's girlfriend -- though for how much longer was anyone's guess. Becca knew her brother well, better, perhaps, than he actually knew himself, and the awkward dive he'd taken in dating Cassie had been yet another episode in denial theater. At least, that was her opinion. Another girl Becca would probably have to dump for him.

"Hey Cass," she greeted brightly enough, dropping her head back onto the grass unceremoniously in favor of a small wave. It was unfortunate, though, she thought. Cassie was a pretty girl, and sweet enough if a little high strung, Becca supposed. But then, most prefects seemed to be like that, maybe it was in the job description. All the same, she could do much better than her knucklehead of a little brother.

With a groan, Becca finally sat up, stretching her legs out in front of her and wincing as she bent forward to grab her toes, stretching the burn out of her legs. Hopefully Kit would break it off sooner rather than later, it wasn't fair to keep stringing the girl along when she could be with someone who actually liked her, and wasn't just hiding behind her. Blowing hair out of her face, Becca sat up again and rearranged her legs, folded beneath her into a butterfly.

"How'd your first week go?" she asked generically, nodding toward a spot beside her in the grass. "Stretch with me, you can warm up while I cool down."

Notes: "Just Cassie." My heart hurts.
I'D NEVER SAY A WORD.
Cassiopeia had every reason to feel awkward in the moment, seeing as her presence had interrupted the older girl’s isolated workout, but being who she was, it was only maximized in her eyes. Her fingers still fiddled over the material of her purple t-shirt, her anxiety slipping through in almost everything she did. Perhaps it would be better if she just ran back to the common room and crawled under her blankets again and didn’t come out until it was time to go home in December.

A lot of people wanted to say that Hogwarts was their home away from home, but she was one incapable of agreeing. All she felt here was stress, and constant social panic and pressure, and her bed at home was much more cozy than the one at school, even if she was always half-freezing in the small MacDonald house.

Becca greeting her did ease her some. At least she acknowledged the fact she was impeding upon her private time, and even if it wasn’t an invitation to stay, it helped to calm her down from how worried she was. Normally she didn’t like it when people called her Cass, mostly because it was a nickname from a nickname, but also because it was used by her brothers and sister often to tease her around the house, but when the older brunette used it, it didn’t seem so bad. She tried not to take it too personally that she put her head down; surely the girl was just exhausted from her workout, not ignoring her.

Soon enough Becca sat up, and she offered to stretch with her. Immediately the girl dropped her bag and walked over, heading over to where she had been nodded to sit. Once she did, she followed her teammate’s lead, going through the motions a few seconds behind to be able to the same, trying not to look as if she was staring a little too long. She decided to busy herself with the question, looking down to the blades of grass as she did so.

“It’s been not too bad. A bit difficult integrating the new prefect duties that were gained from moving up a year, but I think I’m handling it well- Excluding me almost falling asleep in Muggle Studies. Luckily Professor Brisbane didn’t see me.” She humbled a little bit at the end, not wanting to seem as if she was bragging or attempting to gain sympathy for the honor of being prefect. It was a massive responsibility to be one, but it was also a position of power and one she had accepted willingly- With a heavy amount of persuasion from the aforementioned professor.

Shifting to stretch the other leg, Cassie let her gaze wonder back for just a few moments to the girl as she directed the conversation back to Becca. She didn’t want to hold the spotlight for too long, not being a natural speaker. “And you? How was your first week? And your summer too? Oh! Thanks for letting me stretch with you, by the way.” A smile crossed her features before she went back to stretching out her legs, her brown eyes dropping as she did.
